Fiona’s Handcrafted Soaps are made by the cold process method. Cold process soap combines oils and sodium hydroxide, lye, which causes a natural chemical reaction called saponification. Fiona has perfected her recipe for these cold process soap bars using the best blend of coconut oil, castor oil, and olive oil, along with essential or fragrance oils.
Superfatting is an important consideration for our bars. This is the technique of skillfully adding extra amounts of oil to the soap recipe while keeping the lye amount the same. The additional oil adds extra moisturizing and smoothing qualities to the soap. We superfat our bars by at least 15%!
After the soaps are made, each batch is cured for at least 6 weeks in a cool, dry place with good airflow to ensure excess water is evaporated. This creates harder and milder bars that last longer in the shower. We cure our soaps for that duration because the firmer the soap, the more lather it will produce, and overall, it will be a better bar of soap. We keep batches small, just 8 bars per batch. This helps with quality control and also promotes creativity.
Our cold process soaps contain no artificial preservatives, SLS (artificial lathers), palm oil, or parabens, making them better for the environment and healthier for the skin. Ideally, these soap bars should be used with self-draining soap dishes and should not sit in water for extended periods.
